LED strip is the most forgiving lighting product to buy and the least forgiving to install. Done well it produces a seamless line of light with no visible source. Done badly it is a row of glaring dots stuck to a skirting board with failing adhesive. The difference comes down to five decisions.
1. Use an aluminium profile. Always.
This is the single biggest difference between amateur and professional results, and the step most often skipped. An extruded aluminium channel with a frosted opal diffuser does three things: it hides the individual diodes so you see a continuous line rather than dots, it gives you a clean mounting edge, and — most importantly — it acts as a heatsink. LEDs stuck directly to plasterboard or wood cook themselves and dim prematurely. Profiles come in surface, recessed and plaster-in versions.
2. Match the driver to the run, with headroom
Multiply the strip's watts per metre by the length in metres, then add at least 20%. A 10 W/m strip over 4 m draws 40 W, so buy a 60 W driver, not a 40 W one. Check the voltage matches exactly — a 24 V strip on a 12 V driver will barely light, and 12 V strip on a 24 V driver will destroy itself.
3. Respect the maximum run length
Voltage drops along a strip. Push a 12 V strip much beyond 5 m from a single feed and the far end will be visibly dimmer and warmer in colour than the near end. 24 V strip tolerates roughly double the distance. For long runs, feed power from both ends or split the run and feed each section separately — do not simply chain lengths end to end and hope.
4. Cut only on the marked lines
Every strip has printed cut marks, typically every 50–100 mm, with exposed solder pads. Cutting anywhere else severs a circuit and kills the segment. Measure first, and buy a little extra — you can only ever cut down to the next mark, never between.
5. Choose the right IP rating for where it goes
Indoors and dry, IP20 bare strip in a profile is fine and gives the best light quality. In a bathroom or kitchen splash zone you want IP65. Outdoors, in a sauna or anywhere it may be washed, you need IP67 or IP68 — our sauna strip is IP68 and rated to +100 °C, which ordinary strip is emphatically not.
A few finishing details
Clean the surface with alcohol before using the adhesive backing, and add mounting clips on anything vertical or overhead — the tape alone will let go eventually, especially when warm.
Plan where the driver lives before you start. It needs ventilation and it needs to be reachable if it ever fails. Burying it permanently inside a sealed plasterboard bulkhead is a decision people regret.
Buy strip, profile, diffuser, driver and connectors together. Half-finished strip installations are almost always the result of discovering a missing part on a Sunday.
